Casey’s Pay

An entry-level worker at Casey’s can expect to earn at least $9 an hour to start as a team member. This is very low but it is just about the average starting pay for convenience store workers.

Currently, since Casey’s has locations in 14 states in the US, the starting pay differs in each state due to each state’s minimum wage. For example, in North Dakota where the minimum state wage is $7.25 an hour, you can expect to earn a minimum of approximately $9.00 per hour. However, in Illinois the state’s minimum pay is $11.00 an hour, so you can expect to be earning at least that amount to start!

The reason the pay is so low is because convenience store companies such as these don’t want to initially spend too much money on a worker who is highly likely to quit after a few days to a few weeks. The employee turnover rate for convenience store workers is really high!

These companies would rather periodically give raises to workers once they prove they are loyal to the company.

Salaries and hourly pay for experienced workers are average when compared to other convenience store chains in the United States. For example, an experienced team member makes approximately $10.65 an hour.

Grocery Driver

Casey’s grocery drivers transport products from the distribution warehouses to all of their designated stores. Usually, overnight travel is required and whenever you have to stay at a hotel, those expenses will be paid for you.

Currently, grocery drivers are getting a sign-on bonus worth $5,000. This is given in three payments and these drivers receive the first $1,000 after their first three months of work, $2,000 after six months, and after one year, another $2,000.

Casey’s Application Process

Once you submit your Casey’s application online, it usually takes anywhere between 1 to 2 weeks to get a callback from a hiring manager to set up an interview. Sometimes, you can expect to receive a call within 1 to 2 days.

If you’re applying for a team member or any other entry-level position, you will usually have one interview in person. If you are applying for a salaried position, you can expect a phone interview followed by at least two in-person interviews.

It usually takes anywhere between 1 to 3 weeks to be hired at Casey’s after you submit your application.

Casey’s Interview Questions

Casey’s usually asks very simple questions to see if you are flexible with your scheduling and you’re someone who sees a future with this company. The last thing this company wants to do is to hire another employee who’s going to turn around and quit within the first month.

Therefore, you need to make it appear as if you are in it for the long-haul!

Examples of questions you may be asked during the interview are:

  • Where do you see yourself with this company in five years? A good answer would be that you see yourself as a store manager or at the very least, as a supervisor.
  • What is so special about you that would make me hire you? Let the interviewer know about your great personality traits in regards to working in a retail store environment. You can say something such as, “I take pride in my work, I get along well with my coworkers, I’m respectful, dependable, and my goal is to be a store manager to lead our team to success in the future.”
  • What days of the week and times are you available to work? This is always an easy question to answer and it should always be that you are available any day at any time, unless your family obligations don’t allow you to do so.
  • Why do you want to work at Casey’s? Simply answer this question by talking about your career goals as they apply to the way Casey’s operates.
  • How would you treat an angry customer? During your answer, always place the customer first and say you would do everything possible to please the customer and make things right.

Minimum Age to Work at Casey’s

The minimum age to work at Casey’s is 16 years old. This company encourages teenagers who are looking for a first job to apply.

The company’s philosophy is that 16 and 17-year-olds can gain valuable work and life experience and assist their communities while working at Casey’s.

Background Checks

Casey’s does not normally conduct background checks for new hires trying to get jobs as team members. However, they occasionally do run background checks on people applying for management positions.

Additionally, if you’re applying at the corporate level or any other higher liability positions such as service technician, you may be subjected to a background search.

Does Casey’s drug test?

Many employees report that most team members are not drug tested as a condition of employment. However, some people say that even team members and especially management personnel are given a drug test before they are hired.

Therefore, there’s simply no way to tell. Drug tests vary from store to store due to different management and hiring teams. Also, keep in mind that warehouse workers do get drug tested because of the inherent dangers in a warehouse.

Does Casey’s hire felons?

Casey’s hires felons but it all depends on several factors including:

  • The type of felony you were convicted of
  • If it’s a felony theft, then your odds of being hired decrease substantially
  • It depends on the hiring managers and what their policies are because they are allowed to have discretion
  • The location of your place of employment

Having a felony should not deter you from going online and filling out an application at Casey’s. Also, in some states, it isn’t possible to check someone’s criminal background after a certain number of years. The bottom line is, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

History

Casey’s first general store opened up its doors in 1968 in Boone, Iowa. Donald Lamberti, the owner and founder, experienced enough success with his first store to begin opening up others.

During the late 1970s, Casey’s already had 118 stores, including the original one in Boone, Iowa.

These days, the tradition of this convenience store continues through 16 states in the US at more than 2,300 locations. This retail chain also employs close to 37,000 workers.

Casey’s Benefits

Casey’s offers a comprehensive health benefits program to his full-time workers and offers decent benefits to his part-time employees.

After you’ve worked there for 90 days, you’re entitled to a 401(k) plan with a 6% match, which is awesome! This is a great benefit to have.

As an example, while earning just $20,000 a year, if you contributed 6% of your salary from the age of 25 to 65, and Casey’s matched that 6% dollar for dollar, you would have approximately $600,000 in your 401(k) plan for retirement. Of course, if you start out making $20,000 a year, you would without a doubt, get periodic increases in salary, so your 401(k) amount would probably be closer to the $1,000,000 mark after 40 years!

Other full-time benefits include a stock purchase plan, medical leave, vacation, short and long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, scholarship programs, and accident and critical illness coverage.

Part-time employees do not participate in the health insurance program but they get other perks such as being able to participate in the stock purchase plan, wellness programs, scholarship programs, and a limited pay medical plan.

Final Thoughts

Working at Casey’s is actually a very good opportunity for people who want to work in a convenience store environment. Of course, as I said, there are many other positions available in corporate, distribution, and others.

The health benefits offered by this company are pretty good but as with most company insurance plans, it can cost you a big chunk of your paycheck every two weeks. Still, it’s nice to see that this company cares about its employees and at the very least, offers benefits to both full and part-time employees.

The minimum pay offered to new team members by this company is downright shameful. However, if you look on the bright side, it gives you an incentive to work hard and move up into management as quickly as possible.

And this is exactly what this company wants to see. They actually want to make you, the individual, successful by setting your goals on moving up the ladder of success.

If you add to that the positive reviews of past and present workers who talk about great opportunities to get promoted, the great working atmosphere, and the fact that most managers treat their employees with a lot of respect, this is actually one of the best convenience store jobs available.
